If you are using the Skimmer Winterizing Plate, you do not need to install a Gizmo in the skimmer body. The skimmer winterizing plate seals off the skimmer opening on the pool wall and keeps water from entering the skimmer during the off-season. Since no water remains inside, there’s nothing to freeze and expand, so a Gizmo (which is designed to absorb ice expansion pressure inside the skimmer) isn’t necessary.
It is highly recommended to disconnect your filter hoses and leave the bottom of the skimmer body open so that any water that enters over the winter months will simply drain out of the bottom of the skimmer.
