Salt generators for pools, also known as salt chlorinators, convert salt dissolved in the pool water into chlorine through a process called electrolysis. The generator passes the saltwater through a cell containing electrically charged plates, which split the salt (sodium chloride) into sodium and chlorine gas. This chlorine gas dissolves in the water, sanitizing the pool by killing bacteria and algae, and then eventually recombines back into salt, making the process cyclical.
